Tennessee-Martin Men's Basketball Coach and Akron Native Anthony Stewart Dies at 50
by Tim Bielik
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Tennessee-Martin's men's basketball coach Anthony Stewart, an Akron native and Mount Union alum, died on Sunday at the age of 50 of undisclosed conditions.
"We are stunned to hear this tragic news," Skyhawk athletic director Kurt McGuffin said in a statement. "Coach Stewart was a true leader to every one of the young men he coached. He emphasized the meaning of a college degree and instilled professionalism in each of his student-athletes. We ask for privacy during this difficult time."
Stewart had been the head coach at UT Martin since the 2016-17 season, accruing a record of 53-73. In his first season as head coach, Stewart and UT Martin reached the Ohio Valley Conference championship game, losing to Jacksonville State, 66-55.
He was an assistant at UT Martin for two seasons before being promoted to head coach. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Ohio, Southern Illinois, Wyoming and Long Beach State.
