Former LSU Assistant Coach Swanson Dies
MONROE - Arthur L. "Red" Swanson, long-time assistant football coach at LSU, died here Wednesday at the age of 82.
Swanson was head coach at Southeastern Louisiana College, before joining the LSU staff in 1938 as freshman coach. The former LSU lineman was promoted to line coach four years later.
Swanson was passed over for the job of head coach in 1948, but remained on the staff as an assistant.
He is best remembered for spectacular recruiting moves. His most significant accomplishment was convincing Y.A. Tittle to move from the University of Texas to LSU.
After leaving LSU, Swanson became head coach at Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1950, later serving as superintendent of Louisiana Training Institute in Monroe and as a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors.
