University's S.A. Boles Found Dead at Home
S.A. (Daddy) Boles, a University of Kentucky faculty or staff member for 45 years and a man long associated with athletic programs of UK and the state, is dead.
Boles, who was placed on change of work status at the University in 1955, was found dead in his apartment at 265 Lyndhurst Place about 1:20 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Coroner Chester Hager said Boles apparently died of a heart attack. He fixed the time of death as some time Sunday.
Boles, who was 74, served in various capacities at the University, the longest, from 1917 through 1933, as athletic director. In this post he helped bring Basketball Coach Adolph Rupp to UK in 1930.
He also served as head football and head basketball coach.
In 1918, Boles aided in inaugurating the Kentucky State High School Basketball Tournament and was in charge of the first 18 tournaments held on the University campus.
During his later association with UK he was a manager of veterans housing projects at the school after World War II.
Boles came to UK in 1916 from Texas Christian University as physical education instructor and assistant football coach. In 1917 he was head football coach for a year and in 1918 was head basketball coach.
He also served as assistant football coach for several years while he was athletic director.
After leaving the post of Athletic director, Boles was made professor of physical education and business manager of athletics, holding the latter post from 1934 through 1936.
Following this he was ticket sales manager for the Athletics Department until 1946. Boles also was golf coach from 1938 through 1946.
He then served as a manger of the veterans housing project until 1955 when he went on change of work status, being assigned as historian of the projects.
Vanderbilt Graduate
Boles was a native of Williamstown, a son of the late John Robert and Sarah McGowan Boles, and was a member of the First Methodist Church here.
He did undergraduate work at Kentucky Wesleyan College, then at Winchester, and received a master's degree in English from Vanderbilt University at Nashville.
Boles is survived by two sons, John Stanley Boles, Houston, Texas, and William O. Boles, Tiffin, Ohio, and six grandchildren.
The body was taken to the W.R. Milward Mortuary -- Broadway, where friends may call after 5 p.m. today.
