HIGH SCHOOL All-AMERICANS named by by "Chuck" Taylor - Top: Tyra, Tschimperle, Adkins. Bottom: Stout, Mitchell |
UNDER THE leadership of co-Coaches Johnny Altobello of New Orleans' De La Salle and Lawrence McGinnis of Owensboro (Ky.) Senior High, the Southern All-Stars defeated the Northern All-Stars in the fifth annual North South Cage Classic at Murray, Ky., 86-77, last June 13.
It was the second win for the South, their other win coming in the 1949 inaugural clash under the same two coaches. Altobello's fire and McGinnis' coolnesss combined perfectly to produce the victories.
On the floor the Rebels were led by Earl Adkins, 6-3 Ashland, Ky., guard. Working in the middle of the South's three-out, two-in, offense, he directed the Rebel attack.
Leading the Northern cause was David Tschimperle. Adkins was named "Mr. Basektball" and to a spot on Chuck Taylor's annual Converse All-American team, along with Tschimperle.
Gary Nelson, a 7-foot center, scored first for the North on a free throw, but Adkins tied the score for the South with another.
Jimmy Mitchell took the South's first shot after one minute and forty seconds of play, making the score 3-1. Tschimperle then knotted the count at 3-all, but Jerry Mallet, with a free throw, and Adkins with a fieldy put the Rebels in front 6-3.
ACTION IN NORTH-SOUTH TILT - 6-5 Bobby Powers goes high in try to stop 7-foot Gary Nelson's shot. Watching is John Murret (10) of Southern squad, Jerry Mallett at right. |
Keeping the pressure on the North with their aggressive play, the Southerners kept the Northerners disorganized and at one point in the second quarter led 37-19. They led 43-30 at halftime.
Keeping the pressure on the North with their aggressive play, the Southerners kept the Northerners disorganized and at one point in the second quarter led 37-19. They led 43-30 at halftime.
Tschimperle led the North's best bid shortly after the third quarter got underway. He hit four straight baskets in the first three minutes of play, but the South failed to weaken under pressure.
With six minutes left in the game, the North started pressing with the South leading 71-57. Tyra and John Murret, who was the top defensive man on the floor, fouled out and the South was in trouble.
Pressing steadily, the North clsoed the gap to 76-69 before the South started freezing the ball. With 26 seconds remaining Hiles Stout, with a couple of fre throws, cut the South's margin to seven points, but Mallett dropped in a basket at the end to put the Rebels ahead 86-77.
Northern co-Coaches were Art Thomas of Cambridge (O.) High and Bill Shay of Chicago's Fenwick High.
