This section is part of the message you will receive when you sign up for Cat-Chat. It provides information on what type of content is meant for the list and what is not.
Welcome to CAT-CHAT
Congratulations on finding the finest forum on the net for discussions involving the sports programs of the
University of Kentucky Wildcats! If you came here to talk about real, live felines (the kind that shed all over
you and cough up fur balls), you've come to the WRONG place.
CAT-CHAT is an unmoderated mailing list but a basic understanding of what is and is not appropriate for
this list is important. Here's a short list of guiding principles that, if adhered to, that will make life here better for us all.
CAT-CHAT is:
- a forum for discussing University of Kentucky sports
- a place where ideas and opinions may be expressed freely (as long as they are relevant to the stated purpose of the list)
- a list where we treat each other with respect no matter how stupid the other person's idea is (just kidding!); we can disagree without being disagreeable
- a gathering place for a thoughtful, intelligent exchange of ideas and information a timely source of UK sports info.

CAT-CHAT is NOT:
- a forum for discussing felis domesticus (i.e. cats)
- a forum for discussing anything under the shining sun that deals with the state of KY including: politics, current events, kin folks, etc. (try the KENTUCKY list on this same server for most of this stuff)
- Joke of the day, recipe du jour, or any other highly informative, yet unrelated posts
- a place where the Thought Police, Political Correctness Patrol, or Rah-Rah Club will thrash you for heretical statements
- r.s.bb.c, an AOL forum, an online chat room, or any other place on the net where smash mouth insults are the norm
- a never ending pep rally for rah-rah and woofing
- a haven for plagarism and copyright violations (note: short quotes, properly attributed, paraphrases, and summaries are OK - complete copying is NOT)

Email Etiquette
Since Cat-Chat is an email list, there are some courtesies and practices which may be foreign to those who haven't used this type of medium for discussion. Below are some of these practices to assist in creating a productive and enjoyable atmosphere in which to discuss the Wildcats. Note that they are not hard and fast rules for the group and not intended to limit relevant discussion, only suggestions for a more enjoyable and considerate use of people's time. Thanks to Robert Campbell for a number of these points.
When the topic of a discussion changes substantially from the original subject line, it is recommended to change the subject in the reply header and to put the original in parenthesis. (ex. Subject: New Topic (was Old Topic))
If the Subject line has begun to accumulate a number of "Re:" or "Fw:", it is recommended to cut those out if you reply so it is easier to read.
Please delete any irrelevant material from your posts before sending them to the list. Simply pressing the "Reply" button will send the entire previous post (and all previous posts before that!) back to the entire list, where everyone has already read them. A short snippet from a previous post to show what you are responding to or to explain the context of your reply is highly recommended, however. Doing this on a regular basis not only saves bandwidth and people's time, it makes your comments easier to understand.
Please use only plain text on posts to the list. Please do not use HTML (aka "Rich Text"). You may have to go to your email client preferences and turn these options off. Look for the "text only" or "ASCII" option and use those instead. Many people forget that not everyone on the list uses or has access to email clients which can read these types of messages.
Please do not attach any files (this includes "v-cards") to your posts to the list. If you have a text file that you wish to upload to the list; please, first - access it with your word processor, then - "cut and paste" the text to your e-mail client.
If you have a graphic, video, application, or other file that you would like to share with the list, please post only a note with a brief explanation of what you want to share (along with its size if it is a large file) and offer to send it to anyone who wants it, "back-channel." (ie through direct email with the individual, not through the list.) Another option is to upload your file to a ftp or web server and let people know the address. A number of people on the list are capable and willing to provide this service to people who don't have access to uploading files. Just ask on the list.
Make sure to set your messages so that the "Reply-to" goes back to the Cat-Chat list rather than the person. It makes it easier for people to reply to your message if it is done this way and increases the probability that someone will successfully reply to your post to the list. Of course, if you meant for people to reply back to you back-channel, the other way might be the preferred default.
As the season begins and the message volume increases, it becomes more important to stick to the topic and refrain from non-essential, off-topic, "me-too" etc. posts. During the off-season, things are a little more lax due to the low volume. It is generally good to ask yourself before you post how relevant the post is to Kentucky sports.
If a message is meant for an individual (such as a thank-you note, a specific request etc.) and the relevance to the list at-large is questionable, it is generally better to send the message "back-channel" rather than to the list. A prime example is if someone accidentally sends an inappropriate message to the list, it is far better to discuss the issue with them back-channel rather than point it out and discuss it on the list. To do so only fills the list with non-relevant material.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
There are some technical issues associated with this list. Below are some common problems and questions people have concerning the list.
How can I subscribe to CAT-CHAT ?
Send an e-mail to listserv@lsv.uky.edu containing simply the words "subscribe cat-chat" (without the quotes, of course). You should probably make sure the message is in text only and doesn't contain any extra text such as signatures etc. The listserv will respond with an e-mail telling you how to confirm your subscription.
How do I unsubscribe to CAT-CHAT ?
The major mistake many people make is addressing commands to the list rather than the server. Here is what you need to do to unsubscribe:
1. Address your message to listserv@lsv.uky.edu. Notice that there is no "e" at the end of "listserv."
2.Do not include anything in the "Subject" line.
3.Make your message read simply UNSUBSCRIBE CAT-CHAT.
4. That should take you off the list. The listserv will respond with an e-mail telling you how to confirm your unsubscription.
How can I modify my subscription to CAT-CHAT ?
Send an e-mail to listserv@lsv.uky.edu containing simply the words "help" (without the quotes, of course). The listserv will respond with an e-mail telling you how to change your subscription settings such as digest, nomail, signoff, etc.
Any comments or suggestions, please email me.
